What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is one of the oldest healing arts in the world, ranging back to over 3,000 years. It’s theory is based on the flow of energy in the body called qi (chee). When qi flow is disrupted due to trauma, poor diet, medications, stress or other conditions, pain or illness result.

Acupuncture focuses on correcting these imbalances of energy flow by inserting ultra-thin, hair like needles under the skin to stimulate specific points in the body. Stimulation of acupuncture points allows even flow of qi, restoring the body’s balance and relieving pain and other symptoms.

Acupuncture’s complex system of diagnostic methods take into consideration the person as a whole, not just isolated symptoms. The aim is to treat the underlying cause of the symptom and thus improving quality of life.

Acupuncture works with the body, harmonizing and balancing energy. It improves circulation, releases endorphins, and allows the body to heal itself more quickly and more completely. Best of all, acupuncture is safe and side-effect free, making it a wonderful medical option especially during pregnancy!

What does acupuncture feel like?

This varies from patient to patient and practitioner to practitioner. Some points on the hands and feet can be a little more “sensitive”, but most of the time patients are surprised by how “pain free” acupuncture is. I look for a dull aching, warming or spreading sensation in the points. Most patients feel extremely relaxed and balanced after an acupuncture session!
